Dear Parents,

We want to take this opportunity to remind parents and students of our policies and procedures regarding the use of cell phones and other electronic devices at Roosevelt High School.  This letter is in response to the number of violations and concerns we have involving the unacceptable use of portable technologies students may be bringing to school. Board policy states:

A student may possess a cellular telephone or other electronic device (ECD) in school, on school property, or after school activities and at school-related functions, provided that during school hours the cell phone or other ECD remains off.  Also, during school activities when directed by administrator or sponsor, cell phones and other ECDs shall be turned off and stored out of sight.

Prohibited activities:

·         Devices that are capable of capturing images, electronic or otherwise, are prohibited from use in bathrooms or locker rooms, even at another school district.

·         Connecting a cell phone and/or ECD to the District’s Wide Area Network.

Possession of a cellular telephone or other ECD by a student is a privilege which may be forfeited by any student who fails to abide by the terms of this policy, or otherwise engages in misuse of this privilege.

Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action and confiscation of the cellular telephone or ECD.

The student who possesses a cellular phone or ECD shall assume responsibility for its care.  At no time shall the District be responsible for preventing theft, loss or damage to cell phones or ECDs brought onto its property.

Effective November 26, 2007, building procedures will be as follows:

·         Cell phones and all other electronic devices (iPods, MP3 Players, Games, etc.) must be turned off (not on vibrate or silent) and kept out of sight the entire school day including passing time and lunch.

·         Roosevelt High School staff will confiscate the phone or electronic device from any student violating the policy.

·         The item will be turned over to the student’s assistant principal at the staff member’s earliest convenience.

·         The item must be picked up by the student’s parent after 3:00 pm the day following the confiscation.

·         After a second violation the item may be picked up after TEN SCHOOL DAYS from the student’s Assistant Principal.

We understand the convenience cell phones provide you and your family, but we must help the students become responsible and conscientious in their use of all technologies.  Cheating, access to the internet, access to the District’s Wide Area Web, and taking unlawful pictures are among the many concerns we have regarding the use of cell phones and other electronic devices.  Please support us in maintaining a safe learning environment free from unnecessary distractions.

Sincerely,
