The boy’s and girl’s track
teams started their season off with one win and one loss each.
The girl’s defeated Fordson on
April 17 and lost to Trenton on April 3 with a loss by only eight
points. The boy’s team beat Dearborn Heights Crestwood on April 17
with a score of 105-28, but lost to Trenton on April 3, not far from
the win.
"I’m not pleased with losing
but considering last year, Trenton beat us by almost 60 points and
this year we lost to them by 14. It was very close and our guys are
still improving," said boy’s Track Coach Dave Lustic.
Sophomore James Maloney is
also pleased with their current record.
The team is doing better than
they did last season.
At the meet versus Trenton
pretty much everyone did their best but a few that stuck out were
runners such as junior Seth Kelsey, junior Ryan Newsome, and
sophomore J.J. Budzyn according to Lustic.
"We had a lot of guys that
just came out and just ran real hard and were impressing," said
Lustic.
The team would like to keep
getting better and start showing other schools that may have beaten
them in the past that the team is a force to be reckoned with this
year and the years to come.
"We improved from last year
and we’re a young team coming up," said Maloney.
Although the team has only
three seniors, the juniors have stepped up and taken leadership in
the team, according to Maloney.
"Seth Kelsey, Jordon Thackery,
Jared Strait, Ryan Newsome, Jacob Koch, Zachary Persondek, Aaron
Gibson, lots of juniors, which is nice," said Lustic. "We have a
very quality team, not just talented athletes but good kids overall,
so it makes it easy to have plenty of leaders on the team."
Coach Lustic is confident that
the team is going to be a lot more competitive in more meets than
last year and that you will be seeing more of Wyandotte’s competing.
He also thinks they may be one
of the top teams downriver.
The fact that there are only
three seniors means as long as the team keeps working hard, they can
have it back again for the next year and years to come.
The girl’s Track team has also
done really well according to girl’s Coach Krissy Powers.
"I was impressed by how we did
because I didn’t really know what to expect from us. I mean you work
hard in practice and you think everything looks great but you never
really know how you do until you go against someone else," said
Powers.
The Trenton meet brought some
unexpected first places for freshman Haley Cable who got first in
the hurdles, junior Telia Tromblay threw her farthest distance in a
couple of her throws for shot put, and freshman Stephanie Mullen,
who was trying pole vault for the first time and has not done
anything higher than a 5’2" at practice but jumped a 6’6" in the
meet.
"I think the first meet when
really well, I think I did a lot better than I thought I was going
to do, and I got some good times," said Cable. "Our team works well
together, our coach really stresses being a team and practicing
together."
Senior Heather Loselle agrees,
"We work hard together as a team; we’re getting closer as the season
goes on. I think after our first few meets we’re going to be better
and improve."
The team’s three seniors,
Kortney Borregard, Elizabeth Kakos, and Heather Loselle help work to
keep the team united.
"I think a lot of students
forget that track is not an individual sport, it’s a team effort.
You win based on your scores that all come together, we’re still
learning on that aspect," said Powers. "At our first home meet we
did a great job on working together to get the hurdles out and cheer
on the teammates, but we can improve in that area."
Both track teams are eager to
go to leagues and go against all the teams again.
They also are shooting to get
their best times. Leagues are on May 22 at Wyandotte.
"Our goal would be to place in
leagues," said Maloney.
